National Geographic Project Week 1 - Research and Note Taking

To the left is a video of directions for week 1 of our project - taking notes about the animal you choose to research.

We will begin creating your presentation about your animal. Your presentation will be in the form of a National Geographic magazine. We need to begin this project with research about a chosen animal. You will then write four or five articles about your animal. Use the note taking document to take notes while you research.

Video Directions on the left. Use the websites below to find the following information about the animal that you have chosen. Gather details about your animals: physical appearance, habitat, diet, adaptations, enemies, is it endangered and other interesting facts.

Week 2 - Writing Your Articles For Your Magazine

When you finish your research, you may begin writing your articles for your magazine. The video directions are on the left and the article template is below.

Click on the template on the left to access the document where you can write your articles. Check you sentences for capital letters at the beginning and the proper punctuation at the end. Spell check your document when you are finished.
Look at this example from a 4th grader last year. These articles are written by her and not copied and pasted.

To present your information, you will be working from a template and adding in your own graphics and text. Click the National Geographic image to make a copy of the template that we are going to use.
Mini-Lessons
How to make a "Stained Glass" text box when using a text box on top of a busy background.
- Click on the text box and go to the paint bucket in your toolbar.
- Chosse a background color that compliments the colors in your picture.
- Go to custom and move the transparency bar to the middle of the line to make the color "see through".
- Now you can see the picture through the text box but see your text better as well.
How to Insert a Video Directions:
- Go to YouTube.com and search for an approved video of fun facts about your animal that is no longer than 3 minutes.
- Copy the video's URL (address)
- Go to the INSERT menu and choose VIDEO
- Choose to insert the video by URL and paste the video's URL
- Choose Select
Week 12 - 13 - The Hour of Code is Here!
*Before you start your dance party, go into the Digital Citizenship course in canvas and make sure you have taken all 5 quizzes. Check your grade and if you are satisfied, show your grade to Mrs. DeSantis.
To begin your Hour of Code, we are going to code your own dance party with Code.org's fun Dance Party module.
Weeks 9 - 11 Finishing Touches and Presentations
After polishing up your presentation, we will begin our digital citizenship presentations. One group will present the first week and two groups will present each week after that. See Mrs. DeSantis to sign up for your presentation time slot.

Weeks 6 - 9 - Digital Citizenship Group Project
For the next 3 weeks, you will work in groups to become a master of one module. Your group will create a presentation to teach the rest of the class what you learned in your module.

Today we will finish our dot stories and group the layers of our dot so we can copy and paste our dot on our story slide.
To group layers: Press Control A to select all of your dot layers. Right click and choose group. Then copy and paste your dot onto your story slide.
